Sweet Roots
In 1902, Canada’s first sugar beet mill was constructed at 1254 Union Street in Berlin (now Kitchener). The mill was instrumental in the towns’ growth into an urban centre. The mill did not live up to expectations and closed in 1920. It later served as a distillery, a scrap metal yard and finally as the home of M. Brown Steel Factory. By then, much of the original structure had been destroyed leaving only a small section of the building standing. Hacienda Sarria began in 2004.
