Prom is a right of passage for graduating high schoolers as they enter into young adulthood. Your prom should be a very special night filled with food, friends, and good memories. Here are 5 tips we at Hacienda Sarria put together to help you plan a memorable prom!
1. Pick a Theme
Step one in planning a prom is deciding on the theme. A theme will help you tie all other aspects of the event together: the venue, the music, and the décor. Choosing one theme that the whole planning team agrees on will make planning all other aspects of the event easy as pie. To make everyone feel involved, take a poll from the graduating class to see what theme the majority of students would like to have. Websites like Survey Monkey make it easy.
2. Location Location Location
The venue is a very important part of prom. We can all agree that the school gym as the venue would put a serious damper on things. Go out and look for a beautiful venue that fits your theme and graducating class size. Your venue is the backdrop for great photo opportunities! Two things to keep in mind when choosing a venue are capacity and budget. Make sure the venue can host all the guests and have extra room for activities! The budget should also always be in the back of your mind throughout the planning process, that's where fundraising comes into play!
Prom planning can get expensive quite fast, so get creative and put the “fun” in fundraising. Selling tickets early on is a good idea, try to plan one or two events that can raise some cash for your special night! Host a talent show or bake sale, or ask community members to put up pledges for your graduating class to go out and do something good for the community like painting a mural, shoveling snow, or cleaning up a community park. It’s a win-win! Make sure they know where the money is going from the start!
4. Food and drink
Exhibition food stations are a interactive and fun culinary experience. It's a fantastic way to display the food and students are also able browse and select the various items. Please notify your organizor or venue of any allergies or dietary restrictions, so everyone can enjoy the food safely. Serving a signature mocktail upon arrival is also always well recieved. Customizing the colour is an easy and elegant way to tie in the theme.
5. Make it personal
Take time to make you prom memorable and personal for each student by creating a video or slide show that includes everyone. At Hacienda we set up a photo booth where students can pose with all their friends while a professional photographer snaps your picture. The images are uploaded online and students can view and download the images, the perfect profile pic!
