The Ontario Sugar Company
In 1902, Canada’s first sugar beet mill was constructed at 1254 Union Street in Berlin (now Kitchener). The mill was instrumental in the towns’ growth into an urban centre. The mill did not live up to expectations and closed in 1920.
It later served as a distillery, a scrap metal yard and finally as the home of M. Brown Steel Factory. By then, much of the original structure had been destroyed leaving only a small section of the building standing.
Hacienda Sarria began in 2004, by reviving the site of the old sugar beet mill.
Looking from Lancaster Street between Berlin and Bridgeport in 1902-1923 this is the sugar beet property. In 2017, homes and businesses on Ash, Birch and Maple Streets fill the foreground acreage. - Waterloo Historical Society
Sugar beets were planted around the factory to supplement those grown on area farms.
This family was one of many in 1903 who picked up work at harvest time pulling each beet by hand then lopping off the roots and leaves. - Waterloo Historical Society
Charming, unique and architecturally stunning, Hacienda Sarria sits rather unassuming, nestled on a six-acre property in a central area of Kitchener-Waterloo. Entrepreneur, Ron Doyle experienced the walk in Northern Spain called "The Road to Santiago de Compostela". The design and architecture of Hacienda Sarria was inspired by this centuries old walk.
The building emulates dreams of European style living combined with the simplicity of a pastoral life. The Spanish style architecture combines with the artistry and exquisite details of the ironwork, stone masonry, wooden doors and works of art - all commissioned and handcrafted by artisans and craftspeople both locally and abroad.
Many aspects of the building, like the commissioned art, ironwork, stone masonry and wooden doors have been hand-crafted by local artists and craftspeople. Local trades and retail vendors helped to shape this ambitious vision into the stunning creation it is today.
Known for its charm and allure, celebrations and events at Hacienda Sarria will leave your guests with an awe inspired experience. Guests of corporate, weddings and special events enjoy the custom architecture and picturesque property overall. Share all of life's meaningful moments in old world elegance!
